EMERALD SOCIETY OF ILLINOIS
![]()
From The Board of Directors
As we approach our Annual 2007 Dinner Dance, we anticipate this celebration with great excitement. Our Irish Men of the Year and Police Officers of the Year represent what the foundation of the Emerald Society was built upon; honor, commitment and pride. In 2004 we honored the now retired Superintendent Phil Cline. One of Superintendent Cline’s main focuses during his administration was to erect a permanent memorial for our fallen Police Officers in a location everyone could enjoy and also would represent the ultimate sacrifice made by these fine Officers. The Emerald Society was one of the first organizations to present Superintendent Cline with a contribution to this cause. The memorial site was decided upon. A permanent structure would be built within the current site of the Gold Star Memorial Park.
Our 2007 Men of the Year played integral parts in the construction of the Memorial. Mr. Scott Arney, CEO of the Chicago Patrolmen’s Federal Credit Union became an advocate for the project & General Manager. Mr. Joseph Power, Jr. also became actively involved and contributed the largest donation to the project by a private citizen. Our Officers of the Year are recognized for the fine police work that represents their dedication to duty and selfless commitment to their profession. They are truly heroes. Every day they bravely do their job, and place their life in harms way to protect others.
We are also recognizing the Honorable Joe Birkett, DuPage County State’s Attorney for his relentless pursuit of justice and his continued commitment to law enforcement. He is also a loyal supporter of the Emerald Society of Illinois.
This year we also are recognizing the Pipes and Drums of the Chicago Police Department. They are celebrating their 25th Anniversary. The Pipes and Drums are the true essence of the Emerald Society and we are proud to honor them on their accomplishments.
And as always, we thank the countless people who support the Emerald Society by taking ads in our Dinner Dance book and continually support our many functions during the year.
Fraternally,
The Emerald Society of Illinois
2007 Board of Directors

For the Good of the Order – This section will be for the members to give and receive information about other members or their families, such as births, deaths, graduations, promotions, etc. Items received for this section will be included in the newsletter as space permits. While we want to let everyone know what is going on with our members, we ask that you limit this to our members and their families and not use this to advertise “for profit organizations and companies”.
Police News - We would like to hear what is going on with your department or agency. This could include such things as fund raisers for a sick, injured or fallen officer or an officer’s family member or, if your agency has decided to get green squad cars or, you’re looking for help with a fund raiser, etc. We just want to share what is going on with our members agencies.
Your Ideas –We would also like to hear your ideas and suggestions for the monthly meetings and other activities. We won’t know what you want if we don’t hear from you.
To Submit Information – We will try to make submitting information as easy as possible. One way will be the good old fashion US Mail. Just send your submissions to Emerald Society of Illinois, P.O. Box 557819, Chicago, IL 60655-7819 or go to our website www.emeraldsocietyofillinois.org and click on the link “News Letter Submissions”, then follow the instructions. Again, please remember that we will try to include whatever is submitted, but the Board of Directors will have the final decision based on content and space available.
New Memberships Open
All members of the Emerald Society are asked to encourage law enforcement Officers of Irish heritage to consider joining our organization. You will note that there is an enrollment form for new members in this issue of the newsletter. Please feel free to make copies of the form for any new members who are interested in joining. If you know of any law enforcement officer or new recruit who may be interested, please invite him or her to one of our meetings. The first meeting will be free for anyone interested in joining. New recruits will receive free membership for the first year. Our next meeting will be the September 10th meeting at Assumption Church.
The Emerald Society was established in 1975 with the purpose of creating fellowship among Law Enforcement Officers in the State of Illinois who are of Irish heritage. Our organization enjoys monthly membership meetings, and interesting topics of discussion, a great meal and refreshments and most importantly, a few hours of fraternizing with fellow Officers. Throughout the year we enjoy many other family oriented events which have become a great tradition among our membership. Our Children’s Christmas Party, St. Patrick’s Day Party, Sports Night and Annual Picnic. Adult functions throughout the year include January Chili Cook-off, February Awards Night, June Rib Fest, July Golf Outing, September Scholarship Drawing and Dinner Dance/Awards Ceremony, October Fest, November Turkey Dinner and Raffle. As you can see, we enjoy many events supported totally by our membership and we are always seeking new members to join our ranks. We encourage our members to promote the Emerald Society and always encourage new young Police Officers of Irish descent to attend a meeting and consider joining our fine organization. March/St. Patrick’s Day Party:
The annual St. Patrick’s Day party was held on Saturday, March 17 at the Galleria Marchetti. The event was well attended and we heard nothing but praise about the venue and the food provided by O’Connor’s Unforgettable Edibles. We have tentatively secured the same location for next year but have not yet secured a caterer. The party was attended by police officers from across the country as well as the Garda Siochana, from Ireland of course, and the Polizei from Germany. We would like to thank the many departments that participated in the parade and the Joliet Police Department for the bus load of officers they brought as well as the Paddy Wagon, which they bring to the parade year after year. We would also like to thank Manager Jon Harmening of the Pipes and Drums as well as the band members who played and marched in uniform and also preformed at our party. This event would not have been as successful without the assistance of Chicago Beverage Systems and their staff, and also the time and effort put in by the Board of Directors and Officers of the Emerald Society.
The Children’s Sports Night was held on May 14 at Assumption Church. As you may recall we changed the Sports Night from June to May in 2006. The June meeting conflicted with Police Memorials being held that time of year. The church basement was also very humid in June which made for a sticky event. We had over 30 children in attendance and gave away two gift certificates for the Target Store in the amount of $75.00, in lieu of the bicycles and helmets. The board felt that this was more fitting so the children could pick out a bicycle that was the right size for them and a helmet of their choosing.
The Rib Fest was held on June 11 at the FOP Hall. We would like to thank all that attended and especially all of the “Cooks”!!! A special thanks to Tom Cody who secured the Larkin Brothers to play and also thanks to the Larkin and Moran brothers for performing.
The golf outing was held on July 9th at Carriage Greens County Club in Darien. The event was attended by over 136 golfers. We had a great day and the rain held off for the golfers and stopped for the drive home. Patrick Moriarty would like to thank everyone who participated and would like to remind everyone that the outing is generally held the first Monday after the Taste of Chicago. We anticipate the 11th annual outing will be held on 8 July 2008. He would also like to thank Chicago Beverage Systems and all of the volunteers.
The picnic was held on Saturday, August 4th at Lions Woods in Des Plaines. The picnic was well attended and we had a beautiful day with just a touch of rain at dusk. Lucky winners won prizes totaling up to $200.00 in cash and twenty cases of beer. In lieu of awarding bicycles and helmets, gift certificate for the Target Store in the amount of $75.00 each were awarded to two children so they could choose their own bicycle and helmet. We would like to thank everyone who attended and also the Board of Directors and Officers who attended and helped put the event together.

The Dinner Dance is our biggest event of the year and the event at which we hope all members will support. It would be a great time to invite your family and friends to enjoy a nice evening in which we pay tribute to people who protect and support us. Also, as you probably know, we present our annual “Ad Book” at the dinner dance. We need your help in supporting the ad book. Many members place ads and/or are able to secure ads from businesses they are acquainted with. If you feel you can contribute to our ad book, please either download an ad form from our website www.emeraldsocietyofillinois.org or contact Debbie O’Connor-Dimaggio at (312) 745-5420 or Patrick Moriarty at (847)772-0709.
